What Is A Cocotte?

Cocottes are special cooking pots made from enameled cast iron. While this kitchenware's name is French, its design actually originates elsewhere in Europe, from the Netherlands. Not only are they great for cooking certain dishes, but they also can be used for presentation purposes.

Some of the best uses of a cocotte are for soups, casseroles, stews, and any dishes with liquid components. The design of the cocotte essentially traps heat in the pot, as the lid forces steam back onto cooked food. As a result, it is possible for someone to cook food in a cocotte at low heat, as the steam will do the work that higher temperatures would have normally accomplished.

The result of the steam phenomenon has a great impact on the taste and texture of certain dishes. For example, it can be used to make meat juicier and more tender. Additionally, it can make broths heartier or even caramelize onions. Overall, it is a great choice for long-term cooking, and is relatively easy to use in that regard.

As mentioned, cocottes are also great for presentation purposes. Why use just a typical bowl when you can serve soups or broths in a finely crafted, eye-catching kitchenware instead? In this fashion, cocottes become more than helpful items for cooking.

Cocottes are appealing, simple-to-use cookware that double as serving containers. They are an excellent addition to any restaurant kitchen, especially in fine dining settings.
